Step 6 - GSSHA Rainfall Loss Information

Scroll Prev Top Next More

Next rainfall loss information must be defined on the "Rainfall Loss" page of the GSSHA interface. The "Rainfall Loss" page is shown below:

Although GSSHA incorporates a number of physically based infiltration mechanisms (e.g., Richard's Equation, Green-Ampt), these infiltration mechanisms are not yet included in the CatchmentSIM interface. However, the interface, does include the initial-continuing loss approach due to its widespread application in Australia. Currently only global initial and continuing losses can be applied, but it is planned to incorporate spatially varying losses in the next release of CatchmentSIM.

We will apply the initial / continuing loss approach so, ensure the 'Initial / Continuing Loss' radio button is selected and enter an initial loss of 0 mm and a continuing loss of 1 mm/hr.

The loss parameters are typically one of the main variables that are adjusted when calibrating the model.

The completed 'Loss Model' page, should look like the following:

Support for Green-Ampt and Richard's Equation infiltration routines will be incorporated in due course if it can be demonstrated that suitable input information can be sourced to support these more complex infiltration approaches and it can be demonstrated these approaches are capable of generating reasonable results for Australian catchments.
