Overview

The 'Find Nearby Gauges' form allows nearby rainfall and stream flow gauges to be identified.  This feature is designed to assist in the identification of rainfall gauges for use with the Rainfall Analyser.

To use this feature, the gauge type must be selected from the 'Gauge Type' drop down menu.  A search radius must also be defined (this will be populated automatically by CatchmentSIM based on the design plane size, but can be altered).  Once this information is populated, press the 'Update Table' button.

All rainfall/stream gauges located within the search radius (measured from the centroid of the design plane) will be displayed in the table along with pertinent information for each including gauge number, gauge name, period of record and gauge type (e.g., daily continuous). This information can be exported to a CSV file by selecting the 'Save to CSV' button.

The main CatchmentSIM display will also be updated to display the location of all gauges displayed in the table as a series of blue "dots". The location of a specific gauge can be identified by clicking on the appropriate row in the table.  The selected gauge will be highlighted in the main CatchmentSIM display as a larger red "dot". Note that the display of gauge locations is temporary only and will be removed once the 'Find Nearby Gauges' dialog is closed.

Those rows in the table with blue text are gauges with data that is already incorporated in the Rainfall Analyser while those rows with black text correspond to gauges with data that is yet to be imported into the Rainfall Analyser. Data for daily rain gauges that is not already imported into the Rainfall Analyser can be automatically downloaded and imported (refer following section).

Automatically Importing Daily Rainfall Data (Australia Only)

Daily rainfall data can be automatically downloaded from the Bureau of Meteorology website and imported into the Rainfall Analyser using the Find Nearby Gauges dialog. To use this feature, ensure the Find Nearby Gauges dialog is populated with rain gauges, as described above.  Those gauges with data that can be downloaded will include a check box in the left column of the dialog. Check boxes will only be available beside a gauge if it is a daily gauge and data for that gauge was not previously imported into the Rainfall Analyser. To download data for a particular gauge, ensure the check box next to that gauge is "checked".

Once all desired gauges are selected, press the LoadSelectGauges button.  CatchmentSIM will begin to download data for each gauge into the project directory as a series of zip files.  As data for each gauge is downloaded, it is unzipped and imported into the Rainfall Analyser. The Rainfall Analyser window will remain open so that the raw data can then be interrogated.
